Do I Need Planning Permission For Conservatory Renovations?
Navigating the complexities of planning permission is often one of the biggest challenges we face in home renovations. For the work that we do at Conservatory Renovators, we are very often asked if planning permission is necessary when carrying out work on an existing structure. The simple answer is that in the vast majority of cases, you will not need planning permission to renovate your conservatory. As it is an existing structure, typically there is no requirement for local authorisation to carry out the work.
Conservatories & Permitted Development
In most cases, conservatories fall under what are called permitted developments. These guidelines give rights to homeowners to make extensions and improvements on their properties without seeking planning permission–except in some cases. Permitted developments must:
- Run within the length of your existing walls
- Cover less than half of your land area
- Have a roof lower than the house’s roof
- Not face onto a road
There are other guidelines, such as depth, the height of the eaves, and extensions like raised platforms. For the vast majority of conservatories, no planning permission is needed to build it in the first place.
Making Renovations
If you have bought a home with an existing conservatory, or you are thinking of renovating your old one, you may naturally have wondered about planning permission. Typical conservatories generally fit under all the criteria meaning they do not need planning permission even to be built. So, in all likelihood, you will not need permission for the renovations. It’s always worth contacting your local planning authority if you aren’t sure as they will be able to tell you whether you need to get permission.
